Cedar Woman draws you in, and holds you spellbound throughout the journey of Lena "Cedar Woman" Young Bear.

It also provides a more realistic view of Native Americans, without the overly romanticized perception that most people have.

This book will make you laugh, cry, and laugh until you cry!
It truly is a must read!

Although we share this nation with a people that lived here long before we arrived, few of us get to experience the beauty and reverence of the beliefs and customs of the original settlers in the up close and personal manner that Debra Shiveley Welch presents for us in this, her newest novel, Cedar Woman.

As we read, we are encouraged to live, breathe, see, feel and even smell and taste the culture of the modern day Lakota Plains Indian. Ms. Welch enriches her book with poetry, prayer and stories taken from Native American writings; she teaches us the language, shows us the customs and gives us recipes for the delicious meals prepared and served at the heroine's restaurant. All that plus the highly entertaining, heart-warming tale of the fascinating, Lena "Cedar Woman" Young Bear and her family, makes this a book that's an experience as well as a story. Kudos to Debra Shiveley Welch for her achievement!

I read Cedar Woman (a few times, actually). What I noticed most is that I don't have thoughts about it so much as I have feelings. I consider this to be the book equivalent of a John Denver song -- it's fully immersing in a "you are there" kind of way. The way John Denver could so, so easily make even the most hardened of city slickers want to go home via a country road, the way every woman wished her man could or would write "Annie's Song" for her . . . Cedar Woman stirs a longing to be with if not of an NdN community, to partake in the richness of their lifestyle, to have true meaning in ceremony. This book is a call to warmth, family, food, beauty in all its forms, and a guide to giving in to love . . . the kind of love that has been waiting -- true love. A side benefit to the reader is the authenticity of the scenarios presented -- the reader is taken on an adventure, but not for a ride. Debra Shiveley Welch could be that beloved and unforgettable teacher of one's youth.

Cedar Woman is a book that will surely become a best seller.

Debra has done a great job to ensure that all things, language, customs, apparel, etc., is correct for the people that she has written about. While telling the story of Lena (Cedar Woman), Debra has been able to draw you into her life and you can "see" what she is trying to say. The turmoil, joys, hardships, and triumphs, of not only Cedar Woman, but all those around her will make you smile, laugh, and cry.

Debra has a way of bringing all the characters to life. I could see Michael in his regalia at the powwow where he and Lena met. I could smell the food that was being prepared in the restaurant.

Open all your senses and you'll feel, see, smell all that the characters did.

This is one book that you will not be able to put down until you have finished it. Let's just hope that she finishes the sequel so that we can further see the life of Cedar Woman and her family.
